Title:    Volunteer small mammal assistant

Job Description:



May 15 to approximately October 31st, 2011. Priority will be given to
applicants who can work the entire field season, or at least either
May-August or June-October.



Seeking volunteers to assist Ph.D. student on research project investigating
differences in small mammal responses to fuel treatments compared to
wildfires.  Volunteers will work as part of a team in trapping,
mark-recapture, and vegetation sampling.  Field season is broken up into two
trapping periods.  During May-August we will be sampling the terrestrial
small mammal fauna, and September-October arboreal species such as northern
flying squirrels, Douglas squirrels, and woodrats.  This position is based
out of Sisters, OR, and most of the field season will be spent camping near
trap sites.  Access to internet and telephone service will be limited during
work hours and a full 24 hours in some locations.  Personal vehicle may be
required for moving between sites and getting to town.



On-the-job training on trapping, handling, data collection, and tagging
small mammals will be provided.

Qualifications:             Required skills and experience:

- Interest in small mammal ecology and conservation, and ecological
fieldwork

- Physically able to work long hours in variable and extreme weather
conditions, hike through rugged terrain, and carry 40 pounds of gear for
short distances

- Fluent in English

- Strong work ethic

- Have a positive attitude and previous experience working as part of a
team.

- Previous field experience is preferred (but *DOESN’T* have to include
small mammal trapping)



Preferred skills

- Previous experience trapping, handling, and tagging small mammals (but not
required)
