WORKING TITLE: Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve
(LSNERR) Monitoring Coordinator

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT:
This position is a fixed-term academic staff appointment with
Cooperative Extension, a division of the University of
Wisconsin-Extension (UWEX). Reappointment to this position after the
initial term is dependent upon availability of funding and performance.
POSITION BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:
The LSNERR Monitoring Coordinator (MC) provides lead oversight for the
System Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP) as well as other LSNERR water
quality monitoring programs. The MC collects, compiles, analyses, and
reports on water quality trends and plans monitoring projects. In
addition, the MC will work extensively with the LSNERR geographic
information system (GIS).
PRIMARY DUTIES/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The LSNERR Monitoring Coordinator will oversee the System Wide
Monitoring Program as well as other LSNERR monitoring programs. The
Monitoring Coordinator will work independently (under the direction of
the Manager and Research Coordinator) and with members of the LSNERR
staff and volunteers involved in monitoring activities. This position is
responsible for collection, analysis, QA/QC, and reporting of water
quality and meteorological data collected by LSNERR programs (e.g.,
SWMP) and by others. The Monitoring Coordinator will work with the
Research Coordinator to support the work of visiting researchers.
70% COLLECT, COMPILE, ANALYZE AND SUBMIT WATER QUALITY AND
METEOROLOGICAL DATA AND METADATA. Tasks include: calibration and
installation of water quality datasondes at field sites; installation
and maintenance of a meteorological station; download, compile, assure,
document, and submit data; summarize and prepare reports. Assist with
coordinating, monitoring, and installing telemetry systems.
20% COLLABORATE WITH APPROPRIATE PERSONNEL ON APPLICABLE PROJECTS FOR
FURTHER RESEARCH AND STUDY. Assist in partner research/ monitoring
projects. Attend related workshops and meetings; conduct presentations
as needed.
10% ASSIST WITH MAINTENANCE OF THE LSNERR GEOSPATIAL DATABASE. The
LSNERR MC will assist in collecting geospatial data and maintaining data
in the LSNERR GIS database.
OTHER REQUIRED JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, test, refine, and implement an ecological indicators / status
and trends monitoring framework for the LSNERR project area and St.
Louis River watershed to acquire, archive, and summarize information
related to the management of coastal watersheds
- Assist in the LSNERR Sentinel Site program with installing surface
elevation tables, permanent vegetation transects, and wells to measure
the water table in freshwater marshes
- Coordinate and conduct post restoration treatment monitoring
- Coordinate and conduct status and trends monitoring and compliance
monitoring on behalf of the LSNERR program
- Participate in and lead (as necessary), project coordination meetings,
proposal development, report preparation, technical assistance
- Ensure that position responsibilities are conducted in a manner that
enables all potential clientele to have equal access to programs and
facilities
- Participate in staff meetings and retreats, and prepare a personal
annual accomplishment report, including a description of work priorities
for the forthcoming year
- Develop and follow a plan for professional development
- Build and strengthen community coalitions and partnerships while
collaborating with a diverse network of community-based agencies, groups
and individuals to address local issues through educational programming

TO BE CONSIDERED ELIGIBLE FOR THIS POSITION, YOU MUST MEET ALL OF THE
FOLLOWING MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in
environmental science, biological science, water resources, chemistry,
natural resource management, marine sciences, conservation, or a related
field
- Significant experience in collecting water quality monitoring data
including: pH, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen
concentration, Secchi disc depth, chlorophyll concentration, turbidity,
and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus)
- Significant experience in the operation and maintenance of recording
water quality probes (datasondes)
- Experience developing QA/QC plans
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a vehicle
- Knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate a boat
- Knowledge and skills to effectively interact with people from
different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race,
ethnicity, national origin including indigenous cultures, religion,
socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and
other aspects of human diversity
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in
environmental science, marine science, water resources, chemistry,
natural resource management, conservation, or a related field
- Demonstrated familiarity with the National Estuarine Research Reserve
System
- At least two years of experience conducting water quality
assessments/monitoring
- Experience managing a water chemistry laboratory
- Experience operating water quality laboratory equipment (e.g.,
spectrophotometer, GC, fluorometer)
- Experience in the identification of aquatic plants and animals
- Experience in experimental design and statistics
- Experience with using GIS software and global positioning systems
- Familiarity with the St. Louis River
- Demonstration of effective communication skills with people of all
ages and educational backgrounds
- Experience writing and securing grants
