I am recruiting a PhD student to join my lab group in the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia, to contribute to a new research project on longleaf pine savannas of the southeastern US. The project will focus on biogeochemical cycles, particularly on N fixation (via herbaceous legumes, soil crusts and free-living bacteria) in the context of fire regimes and forest disturbance. This work builds directly on a series of studies in tropical forests (e.g., Barron et al. 2009; Wurzburger et al. 2012) that demonstrate the interactive role of P and Mo in regulating the process of N fixation within soils and across landscapes. The new student will receive a competitive 4-5 year research assistantship and benefit from interactions with collaborators from the Joseph Jones Center and Princeton University, as well as the dynamic community of ecologists in the Odum School and across campus at UGA.
Strong candidates will have 1) an M.S. in ecology, soil science or forestry or have previous research experience in terrestrial biogeochemistry, and 2) have competitive GPA and GRE scores. Prospective students can contact me directly (Nina Wurzburger [email protected]) and send a CV and brief statement of research interests.
