The Department of Forest Management at the University of Montana is looking to fill two full-time summer positions to collect field data for a long-term study on the effects of forest overstory and understory treatments on vegetation composition and structure, as well as on seedling/sapling growth. The research will entail travelling to remote forested sites in western Montana and central Idaho to collect information on understory species and cover, on tree growth and abundance, and on site productivity. Opportunities also exist for funded graduate research on the project beyond summer 2014.
Field work will commence in early/mid June and run through August 2014. Work will be based out of Missoula, MT, though the work at a number of more distant sites will require staying at/near the site for up to 4 nights. The positions will pay $10.00 to $12.50 per hour (40 hrs/week) depending on experience. Qualifications/Interests: -able to identify tree and understory species common in the inland northwest -ability to navigate and locate measurement plots using directions, map, and handheld GPS -possess a valid drivers license Interested individuals should send resume and/or questions to David Affleck, Associate Professor of Forest Biometrics (Tel: 406-243-4186; Email: david.affleck at umontana.edu)
