The Ecological Restoration Institute (ERI) at Northern Arizona University
in Flagstaff, AZ is hiring seasonal technicians for summer 2015 to assist
with field research on forest restoration and ecosystem health projects.
The ERI is nationally recognized for mobilizing the unique assets of a
university to help solve the problem of unnaturally severe wildfire and
degraded forest health throughout the American West. The ERI collaborates
with land management agencies and communities by providing comprehensive
focused studies, monitoring and evaluation research, and technical support.
The mission of ERI is to serve as an objective leader in research,
scholarship, education, and collaborative efforts to plan and implement
restoration treatments for frequent-fire forest and woodland landscapes of
the West.

Seasonal research technicians will utilize a variety of methods to measure
forest attributes such as tree height, diameter, and condition class; tree
regeneration; shrub abundance; and surface fuels. Technicians must be
familiar with use of diameter tapes, loggers’ tapes, hypsometers or
clinometers, and field computers. Prior experience in standard forestry
measurements and field data collection is necessary. In addition, prior
experience in plant community measurements and southwestern plant
identification is preferred.

This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position expected to begin mid-May
and carry through late August. Work periods consist of four to eight
consecutive 10-hour days depending on location, followed by three to six
days off. Seasonal research technicians will be working in the high
elevation coniferous forests of Arizona and possibly other locations and
ecosystems. Technicians may be required to work in remote backcountry
settings under potentially adverse weather conditions. These may be rugged
environments with elevations ranging from 5,000-9,500 feet. Research
technicians must be able to carry field equipment up to 25 lbs., in
addition to personal gear. Technicians must be prepared to work and camp
for up to eight consecutive days. Candidates must have a valid driver’s
license and be able to frequently travel away from Flagstaff (up to 20 days
per month) for fieldwork. Must be able to work with diverse groups of
people.

Salary
