The Jornada Experimental Range is seeking applicants for a Data Scientist 
position with a focus on managing Long-Term Agroecosystem Research Network 
(LTAR) databases in support of research activities for the National Wind 
Erosion Research Network. Duties include:
•       Establish and maintain metadata, quality assurance, and quality 
control protocols for ecological, sediment transport and meteorological 
databases.
•       Develop a database system that enables integration of National Wind 
Erosion Research Network data with national ecological monitoring databases 
maintained by e.g., the Bureau of Land Management and Natural Resources 
Conservation Service. 
•       Maintain and ensure quality of databases.
•       Develop data extraction tools to couple monitoring databases with 
aeolian sediment transport models.
•       Support data entry, analysis and reporting of monitoring data and 
related model data products.

Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, informatics, 
computer science, or other quantitative field (e.g., physical sciences) and 
five (5) years of professional experience related to the duties as outlined. 
Solid command of computer software/applications such as Python, R, Microsoft 
Access, SQL, ArcGIS, etc. Ability to effectively evaluate, prioritize, and 
solve complex situations and multitask. Ability to effectively establish and 
manage projects. Possess strong organizational skills and be detail 
oriented. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively collaborate with 
co-workers across multiple partner agencies.

Preferred Qualifications
We seek a highly collaborative Data Scientist with experience in 
ecoinformatics and big data management. Preference will be given to 
candidates who have completed coursework in one or more programming 
languages and/or focussing specifically on data manipulation and analysis. 
Fieldwork and data collection experience are desirable. Successful 
applicants should be highly motivated and creative. They should be willing 
to work independently and as a part of a diverse and multi-disciplinary 
team.

Appointment
This appointment is wholly or partly funded by extramural funds (e.g., 
grant) which is renewed under provisions set by the granter. Employment will 
be contingent upon performance and continued receipt of funding. This is a 
full-time appointment based at the Jornada Experimental Range in Las Cruces, 
New Mexico, USA. The Jornada Experimental Range is a USDA-ARS laboratory 
located on the New Mexico State University campus. The incumbent would 
therefore be expected to work closely with both USDA and NMSU employees.
