The Department of Biological Sciences at San José State University invites 
applications for a tenure-
track position in Marine Biology. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. and a 
postdoc in Marine Biology or a 
closely related discipline. We seek broadly trained candidates that utilize 
cutting edge field and 
laboratory techniques to address questions about the biology of marine 
organisms and/or communities. 
Candidates should have both field- and laboratory-based research experience and 
have published in 
their area of expertise. Candidates should have a record of excellence in 
teaching or evidence of 
promise for excellence in teaching. Applicants should have awareness of and 
sensitivity to the 
educational goals of a multicultural student population as might have been 
gained in cross-cultural 
study, training, teaching, or other comparable experience.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be expected to take a leadership role in the area 
of marine biology. 
Teaching duties will include the introductory biology core for freshmen, both 
upper division and 
graduate-level courses in marine biology and marine ecology with a community or 
organismal focus, 
statistics and field methods, and/or developing a new course in their 
specialty. The candidate is 
expected to establish a successful research lab utilizing both field and 
lab-based studies in marine 
biology. The candidate is encouraged to develop teaching and research 
collaborations with faculty in 
other disciplines in the department or college. Innovation in teaching is 
strongly encouraged and 
research involving masters and undergraduate students is expected. Candidate 
must demonstrate 
awareness and experience understanding the needs of a multicultural student 
population of great 
diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and 
academic preparation – through 
course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting Date: August, 2019
