Dear All:
On behalf of
the EGSG committee, I am pleased to announce the winner of two of our 2013
Award Competitions(http://geography.wisc.edu/aag-egsg/awards/)!!
The
Best Dissertation Award goes to Stefan Ouma. The title of his dissertation is
Frontier Regions of Marketization Agribusiness,
Farmers, and the Precarious Making of Global Market Connections in Ghana.
Stefan is a research associate in
economic geography at the Department of Human Geography of Goethe University,
Frankfurt, where he completed his PhD thesis in early 2012. Stefan's research
interests span several topics, including global commodity chains, agrifood
standards, agrarian/agro-industrial development in the Global South, critical
ethnographies, and marketization studies. More recently, Stefan has become
interested in the financialization of farmland and agriculture, the
construction of maritime economies, as well as in dynamics of industrial
development in Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region.
The Graduate
Student Research Award goes to Kean Fan Lim. Kean is a PhD candidate at the
Department of Geography, University of British Columbia. The title of his
research project is The
Role of Geo-Institutional Differentiation in the Evolution of the Chinese
Political Economy. Supervised
by Professors Trevor Barnes and Jamie Peck, he is interested in understanding
1) why socioeconomic processes intersect dynamically in specific places; and 2)
how these intersections in turn impact the institutional development of social
formations positioned in different scales.
Congratulations to Stefan & Kean!!
Many thanks to all those who submitted proposals and
dissertation – it was more competitive this year than ever before and we had a
very difficult time making decisions. My thanks, too, to the busy and committed
judges (Peter Hall, Martin Hess, Robin Leichenko, Sue Roberts, Marion Werner).
Best wishes,
Kris
