I always like to quote my grandfather who made it to nearly 90 in
fine health on a diet of bacon so fat you could barely see a streak
of pink in it from the pig at the bottom of the garden, home made
white bread, butter, potatoes, more butter, and well (very well)
boiled cabbage. Unfortunately he then began to get arthritis in his
knees which put a stop to his digging (he had 4 ten rod allotments)
and he died of the heart attack we had all been predicting because of
his diet. Actually I am exaggerating. He also had a passion for
berries which he ate fresh all summer and as jam with the white bread
and butter all winter.
