one of the reasons that i've been holding out from committing this patch
is that it was really tricky for me to reproduce. the user who i worked
with to fix this bug was using icelandic characters. i'm sort of
relying on the fact that he said this patch made his problems go away
and that i haven't heard from again from a german (who had posted a
similar problem) after i posted this patch to the list.
i could forward you the test case posted by magnus to the list in april,
or i could try to find my test code and post you that instead.
or - i suppose - i could post you both.
