TO: EDI-L List

Many of us responsible for implementing e-business systems have run into
the problem of finding skilled staff to design, develop, and lead the
efforts that take good ideas and turn them into solutions. A number of
people who face this problem are trying to tackle it by establishing a
certification program for e-business professionals. This program, called
the EC Institute, will develop technical and managerial certification exams
to determine competence in key knowledge areas and establish targets for
training and education program curricula.

The EC Institute has a board of directors representing the academic world
and business practitioners, and working with a team of volunteer advisors,
has started amassing a body of knowledge, which will become the base from
which they derive the certification exams. You can see the current state
of this work on the EC Institute's Web site at
http://www.ecinstitute.org/ecinstitute/education.htm . We need more help
however, especially in the following areas: architectures, business
relationship models, application of technologies, infrastructure,
telecommunications, application integration, interoperability, strategic
planning, and audit.

The advisors complete the following critical tasks …

-- Outline the actions and behaviors that determine competency in these topics
-- Identify the key knowledge and skills needed to operate successfully
-- List the organizations active in this field (including those that may
already provide certification)
-- Identify metrics or benchmarks related to the subject, and
-- Define terminology for a glossary.

The advisors meet twice a year, usually in conjunction with industry
meetings, as well as take part in occasional conference calls. The next
advisory board meeting is Tuesday 6 March in San Francisco, the day before
the DISA conference.

Several of the participants in the EDI-L list already serve on ECI boards
(you can find their names on the ECI Web site,
http://www.ecinstitute.org/), but we need more good people to help complete
the body of knowledge. If you would like to contribute a little of your
time to this important project, please contact me here at DISA, and
indicate the area of expertise you can offer.
