Paul Wakelam wrote "..Napster has been very efficient at transferring
information [from] one party to another and creating a large community
of users." He asks "Is there anything that can be learnt from this model
that can be used with Ecommerce? Would a central dynamic registry of
EDI contacts, their trading partners and messages ... accelerate EDI?"

Mats Jansson, of Extricity, mentioned UDDI from IBM, Microsoft, and
Ariba - the Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI)
specification, at http://www.uddi.org/ - "UDDI is the building block
that will enable businesses to quickly, easily and dynamically find and
transact business with one another using their preferred applications."

But there can't be too much of a good thing - not only is there the UDDI
endeavor, but ebXML and OASIS also making their stabs at Registries.
And there was CommerceNet's eCo Framework even before these attempts.
Scott Nieman, Project Leader for the ebXML Registry Project Team, views
"...the ebXML Registry to be the 'Napster of Registries' ...promoting
peer to peer interactions between registries and between businesses."
See http://lists.ebxml.org/archives/ebxml-regrep/200102/msg00102.html.

And the latest, breaking news is that "...finally, alliances EbXML.org
and UDDI-which had been in a virtual cold war for superiority in
e-business standards leadership-are about to come to an agreement with
the aforementioned W3C on final standards for Internet commerce. " See
"XML e-Business Standards Agreement in Final Stages," at
http://www.devx.com/free/hotlinks/2001/ednote030701.asp. For a slideware
overview of the potential ebXML-OASIS-UDDI merger, see " IBM UDDI /
ebXML / OASIS presentation given 2/14/01 in Vancouver," at
http://lists.ebxml.org/archives/ebxml-regrep/200102/msg00051.html.

Since ebXML eventually caved in to... oops!! ... "merged with" SOAP -
see "ebXML Integrates SOAP Into Messaging Services Specification," at
http://www.ebxml.org/news/pr_20010222.htm - it wouldn't be too
surprising to see the same thing happen with UDDI.

Normally I would have to be dragged kicking and screaming to a dump like
Vienna - after all, I live in the cultural mecca of the West here in
Columbus, Ohio. But I'm probably going to make the sacrifice and get to
the ebXML meeting there in May so I can have a front row seat if Captain
ebXML tangles with the UDDI Avenger. See http://www.ebxml.at/.
