For additional starters:

1. The Data Interchange Standards Association is NOT a standards development
organization. It is only a secretariat to the ASC X12 Committee, which DOES
set standards.

2. The American National Standards Institute does NOT set standards either.
It ACCREDITs committees, such as the ASC X12 Committee, to do the standards
development work.

3. The UCC is an ANSI-accredited SDO for bar code standards used in the
grocery/retail industry.

Dan,

For starters, try:

Data Interchange Standards Association: http://www.disa.org
Accredited Standards Committee X12: http://www.x12.org
American National Standards Institute: http://www.ansi.org
Uniform Code Council: http://www.uc-council.org

There are plenty of high-level mission statements and other non-gory
information at these sites.
