John,
The first thing I would do is verify with the VAN that the spaces are not
actually in the file.
I would also have the VAN reflag the file file for pickup and try again in case
there was line noise.
Then I would check the data with a hex editor to make sure:
(1) the blanks are blanks - hex 20
(2) there is not some strange record segmentation
The file you have doesn't look like something a modem would create by itself.
