I have seen charges happen all different ways. TP's charging eachother, even
TP outsourcing EDI and outsourcing company charges other TP for EDI work!
It is not logistics industy standard practice to charge seperately for EDI.
Although sometimes the sprinkles with the ice cream are billed seperately, but
either way you pay for them.
During normal circumstances TP should realize EDI is cheaper and not penalize
for it. Otherwise they are encouraging the use of paper. If TP has such
thinking that they prefer not to do EDI, which may make you want to think
about doing business with that TP.

I can't comment on what the logistics industry practice is but I have not
heard of extra charges for EDI
communications. The only time this came up in my experience was when the
logistics people purchased a non-EDI capable
warehouse software package without consulting IT. Then my client had to pay
for the software supplier to upgrade
their software and, perhaps, for VAN charges. We have all heard of extra
charges for sending paper documents but not
vice versa, I suspect. If the use of EDI and any possible EDI charges were
not specified in the original contract,
someone slipped up.
