Interesting topic. Are we really paying for that Value-Add of security with the VANS?
We use Sterling as our main VAN. For exchanging financial data with CitiBank and they gave us their own little proprietary compression tool called CitiCompress, it is not fun to deal with. Citigroup believes simply the VAN transmission is not secure enough. This is the only VAN trading partner that we encrypt data for. For all of our direct connects non-VAN transfers we use various encryption methods ranging from SFTP, FTPS, IPSEC Tunnels, pgp and etc (part of Sarbanes Oxley requirement). If one of the "Value Adds" of the VAN is security, I am not sure what kind of or if any security encryption is being used by the VANS to deliver our data. I heard something about if you use frame relay to send data to your VAN that's considered to be secure. My perception is that a secure AS2 connection with appropriate signing methods and certificate exchanges would be more secure than sending data through the van.
