I agree, this concept is called 'loosely coupled systems'. People learned this hard lession during Y2K.
The original poster may also want to consider how your company is structured. If your ERP Departments and EDI Departments are the same or seperate. IF they were the same then that is a plus for handling the EDI within the ERP system, vice versa.
