One distinction between the above list and the AS* world is that in the
"Internet" type cases at least, there were open source reference
implementations that readily available. SMTP is an example. In the old
days, if your email transport didn't do what sendmail did (warts and all),
it was broken. That was a good thing. Interoperability was the end result
and it happened with out a high priced bureaucratic test process.
