Since you posted to the list, I'll send my reply there...
Sorry for the delay, but I was on the road today...

------------------------------------
We have obtained a 1 tp trial version of /nSoftware's IP*Works AS2
Connector.
I want to run a test with one of our tp's and am trying to set up the s/w
correctly at my site so I'd appreciate any assistance from anyone who has
used this package before.

Do we need a specific (open) port number to use in our firewall?
Also, do we need to assign a static public IP address through an open port
on our firewall or would just an IP address in the form of 192.168.#.###
work (via an open port in our firewall)?
-----------------------------------
You are confusing IP with port.
192.168.x.x is an Internal IP. It is non-routable and exists ONLY within your
network. When the TCP/IP guys invented the protocol, they reserved a few
ranges for internal use (NOT for use on the Internet). 10.x.x.x is another one
of these ranges. You will never be able to connect to one of these from
outside your network...

When you get an internet connection, your ISP either gives you a 'fixed' IP, or
a dynamic IP.
If you have a fixed IP (WalMart is 161.170.244.20 ), then you _can_ give that
number to your AS2 partner. You can give it out, since it is fixed, and will
not change. The only problem is that if you change ISPs. Then your fixed IP
will no longer work and you will have to notify all your trading partners of
the change. Hold that thought for a minute..

My office ISP gives me a dynamic IP. That means that it can change at any
time. Usually every 24 hours. Normally, I would not be able to give my TPs
that IP, since it is constantly changing.

The solution... register a domain name (like walterco.dns2go.com) with a
Dynamic DNS service. They are very inexpensive ( free to $40.00 per year -
http://dns2go.com/pricing/ ). You just install or setup the connection between
your computer and their system, and it will make sure that your dynamic IP is
always pointed to your current internet IP... even if you change ISPs.

Now you can give your TPs your URL ( walterco.dns2go.com ) and it will ALWAYS
point to your server.

You can check your current IP by visiting http://spe-edi.com/links.html and
clicking on the 'Click here to see your IP' text.

Your network admin should know if you have a fixed or dynamic IP.

Ports...
Your internet connection is actually split into thousands of 'ports'. Many
protocols (http, ftp, ssh ) and services (Remote Terminal, pcAnywhere) use
specific ports.
Example: When you go to a web page and type http: , you are automatically using
port 80.

AS2 normally also uses port 80, since it is defined as EDIINT (EDI on INTernet)
using http. For various reasons, you may NOT want to use port 80 since it is
used by 99.9% of web servers. So they pick 9080, 8080, 5080, etc..

Here are some ports that I check every 2 hours:
http://eagle.aafes.com:4080/exchange/14001695568GP
http://207.61.19.137:9584
http://inboundedi.easylink.com:4080/exchange/CYCLCAN
http://as2.sears.ca/ipnet/as2
You can see 4080 for AAFES, 9584 for BMR, 4080 for Easylink, etc..

You can use any of these ports. 4080 is a good choice.
Now that you have picked a port (let's pick 4080), you have to open a hole in
your company firewall, to allow port 4080, and if necessary, forward it to the
INTERNAL IP of your AS2 server.

When you install IP*Works, you ONLY have to tell it what port it will use. The
server will 'listen' on that port.

You then tell your TP how to find you on the internet - via IP ( eg.
161.170.244.20) or URL ( http://walterco.dns2go.com ) AND the port number your
AS2 server is listening on...

It is VERY important to also add the Receiver.aspx , since IP*Works uses some
Microsoft stuff and needs that part of the URL. Here are some of my client
URLs:
http://client1.dns2go.com:9080/Receiver.aspx
http://66.163.xx.xxx:9080/Receiver.aspx
http://client2.dns2go.com:5080/Receiver.aspx

If you use walterco.dns2go.com and port 5080, then you would give your TP:
http://walterco.dns2go.com:5080/Receiver.aspx

Finally, you ask your network person to forward port 5080 to the local IP of
the AS2 computer (192.168.x.y)

I'll write this up soon and add it to my web site...
