Craig,

I feel your pain, but your statement above about e-mail programs be
the root of all evil is only partially the problem. The real problem
is that most email users don't know how to use the "reply" and "quote"
feature it was originally used. Yes, I agree that MS mail application
handling of pasting the complete email at the bottom of a response
message has created the problem of endless trails of e-mail "junk." I
come from the pre-internet email days when dial-up connections were
use with the uucp command to exchange emails.

The norm (best practice) was that "quoting" was used "only" to remind
the sender of the "related" the response was directed to by doing a
"cut & paste". In other words quoting became an art by deleting "most"
information of the original email. Over time email applications added
features that allowed the responder to highlight the text in the
original email before executing the reply command which would create
the reply text as you see on top of this reply. This resulted in
emails being very small but still including efficient quotes serving
as reminders by internet users before MS got into the game with its
email application (now used by the majority) that totally ignored the
best practice.

The bottom line, there are ways of creating clean and easy posts that
don't contain the trains of e-mail "junk" using any e-mail program
with some discipline and respect for others so they don't have to
received miles of unrelated text no longer relevant.

Just my 2 cents.

Klaus
