Adam,

Without knowing all of the facts such as number of trading partners, staff,
monthly volumes etc., it is difficult to compare which would end up being
the better choice for your business case.

I have explained to folks over the past few years that there are always 2
sides to this argument.

Yes, VAN costs are real and at the end of the month you receive an invoice
stating this. However, if your volume is low, the costs may not be
significant enough to worry about. Obviously if you are a Wal-Mart with a
kazillion trading partners, tons of volume and the resources to support AS2,
then AS2 makes sense. If you are a smaller Hub with less trading partners
and lower volumes, AS2 may not make sense business wise. As a Hub, you will
need to know at what point does AS2 work for you.

However, if you are on the spoke side, when your trading partner (800 pound
gorilla) says that they are switching to AS2, you don't really have a
choice. The question is, do you go out and purchase, install, learn,
maintain, swap certificates annually, etc. or do you simply request to your
VAN to set-up an AS2 connection with said trading partner and continue
paying the VAN fees. Again, depending on your volume with that trading
partner, what is the better choice.

If going the AS2 route, keep in mind what your monthly VAN fees are compared
to the added AS2 costs. There will be internal resources required to monitor
the AS2 ongoing. There are costs there that don't come in the way of a
monthly invoice. With most of the members of this site being the worker bees
that wear many hats as it is, the last thing that they may need is another
hat to wear that comes with AS2.

With VAN rates dropping, it is worth shopping around. This is where my
shameless self-promotion starts. Commport, as has been noted on this site
before, offers the best rates guaranteed. We guarantee at least a savings of
20% off of your current VAN fees and in most cases, up to 65% or more. We
switch over a many VAN customers each month, especially from the 2 big guys,
the expensive one as well as the one that keeps on going down. The latter
had another communication issue this week.

If any of you are interested to see what savings Commport can offer, just
send me (off-line if you wish) your current monthly volume and I would be
happy to send you a proposal.

Thank you

THank you for all the respones. I was referring indeed to the Vans vs. AS2
issue and apologize for a bad post.

To recap, I think it would be cost benefit for AS2 in the long term. SOme of
the variables are how large your transactions are per partners.

If anyone could speak of the savings in detail that would be great.

Cheers,
Adam

Ricardo,

I fully share your sentiments regarding the constant promotions by Art

of his services and product offerings which are skillfully crafted

with in his responses. You are correct that a large number of active

participants could do the same, but are reframing form doing so out of

respect. In closing, I don't think we will ever change Art, he is what

he is.

Klaus
