Let's not, at least until the 'obvious' solution is at least
suggested...fortunately I believe you are now looking in the right
direction....

>we did not receive their data. Our fault? No. Can we fix it? No.
>Could we pro-actively work with our customer to resolve so we don't miss a
>shipment affecting their production line? Yes!

And the way you work with them is to teach them why the '997 Functional
Acknowledgement' exists!

If it's important you get your schedule info by some date/time certain in
order to guarantee your customer gets his parts this week, seems to me the
onus has to be on your customer to ensure he has sent you those
requirements. Easiest way to do that is to use the established conventional
methods for confirming safe arrival of a electronic document.

Physician, heal thyself - and open your mind.

Given the possibility no one here had ever done exactly what you wanted
using the same systems and was willing and able to share.... others have
contributed some nice ideas to solve your problem.

True, there has been a brief detour into the Twelfth Century, but methinks a
few detours should not be "breaking news" when working in an on-line peer
support venue.
