Paul,

The UCC (GS1) Manufacturing ID is not only used in the UCC(GS1)-128, it is
used in the VICS BOL. Some retailers are insistent that the real UCC
Manufacturers ID is used. The distributor must also track the individual
companies' DUNS number, contact information (company name, contact name,
e-mail, etc).

The best of breed UCC-128 / ASN modules have multi-company support that type
this information. For example, our ComplyLink B2B shipping software has
multi-company / multi-warehouse support - shameless plug! Each company
record contains the UCC Manufacturer's number and it contact information.

Subject: RE: [EDI-L] UCC-128 Label Question

First of all, I do not see how it would be possible for the distributor to
safely represent all 30 different manufacturers ID's uniquely. Each
manufacturer would also have to give them a pool of free numbers in addition
to their own ID in the event of the distributor being replaced or in the
case of drop-shipments. Impractical and unnecessary.

So, as you are thinking, we go for option 2, which is to cook up their own
ID. This cooking can be officially sanctioned with the distributor obtaining
their own unique manufacturer's ID from the pertinent regulatory agency or,
in the event they do not want to go through that hassle and expense, I have
quite often seen a simple exchange of some number that is satisfactory for
both parties.

After all, the UCC-128 label is a "license plate" used to uniquely identify
a container that is received within a facility in order to match up that
container with it's actual contents as transmitted on an 856 ASN document.
Thus enabling the receiver to know precisely what is in that container
without having to open it up. Thus allowing him to engage in all kinds of
automated routing and charge-back procedures.

This "license plate" often does not need to be globally unique, it only
needs to be unique within the receiver's IT universe and therefore a
mutually agreed-upon number is sufficient.

Subject: [EDI-L] UCC-128 Label Question

Hi Everyone,

I am working on an implementation with a distributor that came up with
an interesting question that I never had encountered before. Since they
represent over 30 different manufacturers and they are getting ready to
ship to a customer the question they poised to me is how do they handle
the UCC-128 label (SSCC-18) number. Do they need to represent all 30
manufacturers different ID's in the label or can they make one up of
their own. I am thinking the latter since they do not make their own
product but I wanted to check with the experts out there to see if
someone had come across this before.

Thanks,

Paul
