Or pehaps ERP questions should be left out all together since this is an EDI
group....

(Hey I'll jump back in the fray since I obviously didn't get beat up enough
last

night LOL)

I agree with pretty much everyone's responses so far and also that Peachtree or
Quickbooks doesn't qualify as an ERP but neither of those software titles were
ever created or marketed as that.  Not a bad accounting package for a small
biz,

but never would I ever consider Peachtree or Quickbooks to ever be anywhere
near

an ERP discussion...

Honestly is there anyone on this list even remotely qualified to say what ERP
system fits with what business, company or manufacturer type?   Who on this
list

fully and accurately understands the differences between:

Discrete Manufacturing, Mixed Mode Manufacturing, Process Manufacturing,
Repetitive Manufacturing, Engineer to Order, Make to Order, Job Shop / Shop
Floor, Distribution, Light Assemby, Services ( Non-MFG)

and THEN be able to make the correct decision for a particular business to
determine the following correct ERP solution from the following companes for
that same company:

Abas Software, BatchMaster, Consona, ECi Software, Epicor, Exact Software,
Global Shop Solutions, IFS, Infor Solutions, IQMS, Microsoft, NetSuite, Oracle,
Plex Systems, ProcessPro, CDC Ross ERP, Sage, SAP, SolarSoft, Syspro, TGI, VAI

or rephrased as "Will the real ERP system selection professional please stand
up"?    Not I said the fly nor me said the Bee.....

But the original email included the statements:  "don't expect a lot of
analysis" and "looking for an off the cuff answer"

Perhaps this sort of question would be better held for a Friday discussion next
time where recipients don't take things quite so serious or as needing such
analysis...

Matt,
I am not familiar with PeachTree, and you'd have to convince me that QuickBooks
is an ERP, I don't believe it meets the definition.

I also don't believe a small company needs an ERP system, however much they
might need EDI capabilities and need to have them integrated. It's not just ERP
systems that can be integrated with EDI systems, speaking of trees and forests,
let's not forget the shrubs and grass.

While any undertaking can accurately be described as an "enterprise", the term
as it's come to be used in business/IT most often refers to a large business
with multiple divisions, departments and/or processes that are not easily
managed using separate, isolated (or even "connected") systems.

And, although I'm the one who called the original question, by implication,
garbage, for its lack of context, I am sure the poster was not expecting
"QuickBooks" as an answer to a question about an ERP.

Leah,

To a small company, Peachtree or QuickBooks can be considered "ERP" packages
and

have a need to be integrated into an EDI solution.

Gotta watch both the forest AND the trees.

Chris,
Nearly all ERP systems are designed for larger companies, with larger budgets,
first clue is in the designation "Enterprise Resource Planning". Pricing out of

context makes no more sense than "recommending" products out of context.

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) integrates internal and external management
information across an entire organization, embracing finance/accounting,
manufacturing, sales and service, etc. ERP systems automate this activity with
an integrated software application. Its purpose is to facilitate the flow of
information between all business functions inside the boundaries of the
organization and manage the connections to outside stakeholders.[1]

ERP systems can run on a variety of hardware and network configurations,
typically employing a database to store data.[2]
ERP systems typically include the following characteristics:
* An integrated system that operates in real time (or next to real time),
without relying on periodic updates.[citation needed]
* A common database, which supports all applications.
* A consistent look and feel throughout each module.
* Installation of the system without elaborate application/data integration
by

the Information Technology (IT) department.[3]
Steve,
Interesting non sequitur.

Leah
