No, the MESSAGE type is identified within the UNH, it is a 6 character code
used in d/e 0065 of S009.

The BGM is a bit mislabeled and should actually be called "Beginning of
Document" since most of its information is about the document name and
identification. Don't be fooled by the segment name, description and composite
names, look at the data element names and you will understand the true function
of this segment.

BTW, the reason why there are BGMs in almost all messages is due to the early
days of EDIFACT when message designers demanded to have such because X12 does.
The design rules don't require it, and looking at the BGM itself, everything in
it is conditional (the international term for optional). Standards are great,
so many options!

Looking at the COPRAR message definition section, it identifies d/e 1001 to be
used for identify the document name via a code value:

"specification of the message type (in data element 1001: Document name code),
such as Empty container disposition order, Release order, Pre-arrival notice,
Acceptance order, Empty container notice, Call-down order, On-hire request,
On-hire order, Off-hire request, Off-hire notice."

However, the code list does not contain many (if any) of the values for the
types identified in the message definition section. It would indicate that a
external industry specific code list is to be used. In this case you need to
use either d/e 1131 or d/e 3055, or even both, to identify the Code list
identification or (and) the Code list responsible agency. One other option,
which some say is not very EDI, is to skip d/e 1001, 1131 and 3055 and just use
d/e 1000 by entering in clear text the Document name :-)

Hope this helps a bit.

Regards,

Klaus
