Hey, if you don't have to read down to the detail to figure out what you're getting, it's just not FUN!

When I made my posting it was after midnight, having just come back home [1], and I *knew* that I should have referred to the standards to see exactly what words were used in various contexts, but was too weary. Having now read the standards and reminded myself of the difference between a message type and a document type, I should not have introduced the notion of a function. As an aside, at EDIMatrix we use the term 'document' to refer to the function which an example of a message type is intended to fulfil. This may be identified by EDIFACT BGM or TRADACOMS TYP, or it can be something entirely different. The worst case I have encountered was in an automotive message where the value of a qualifier in a *detail* segment determined what document it was, and thus how it was to be mapped and routed.
