OTH, of course he can apply for a U.S. patent - there's no guaranty that a
patent would be granted. Patent application effort is neither simple nor
cheap.

I very much doubt it. There are many products and websites which allow 
you to select a directory and then drill down through the hierarchy. 
Your site was neater than most but I saw no original approach which 
might be patentable.
