If they have a manufacturer prefix as you say, then they are the creator of the
GLNs just like they create their own product UPCs, etc.
I agree - tell them to make one and use it.

Subject: [EDI-L] GLN Number required

One of my clients called and said that they needed a GLN.
(Global LOCATION Number)

My experience until now, is that only Walmart has been using GLNs for their
various Store and DC locations.

This request is related to using a UPC Product Data Pool (ie. GS1, ad nauseum).

They already have a manufacturer UPC prefix.

The GLN is a 13 digit number composed of the GS1 prefix (7 digits), Location
Reference (5 digits) and checksum.

I am ready to tell them to 'Make one up', by using their existing GS1 prefix,
some 5 digit number for their location and calculating the checksum.

Here in Canada, I have had a lot of problems when trying to get information
about existing UPC prefixes. (Bottom line: They would not release the
information unless I joined. The whole point of confirming the ownership of
the prefix was to prevent having to join. )
