"EDI" is an acronym for "Electronic Data Interchange" and so "technically" could be used to refer to either file. However....many people use the acronym "EDI" **only** for data formatted to the ANSI X12, EDIFACT or TRADACOMS public standards. Your first example ( "ISA*00..") is formattted as ANSI X12 ; the second is formatted as "not ANSI X12, EDIFACT, TRADACOMS or anything I can identify as a public standard." That is, you and your trading partner may be using the term "EDI" to mean different things.
