Our converter for constructing outgoing EDI , when processing X12,
examines all data fields to see if they contain a syntax character. If
it finds one it substitutes a blank and raises an exception; by default
just a warning but all exceptions can have their severity level varied
dynamically by the user. Being a UK firm we handle little X12, but when
the substitution kicks in the result has so far been found to be
acceptable; certainly preferable to rejecting the transaction.

There is no equivalent for the translation of incoming EDI. If the
sender's converter allowed a syntax character in data then we have no
realistic method of distinguishing real syntax characters from spurious
ones.

Chris
