Agreed.  An external tool will be your best option by far.  They are
dedicated, tested tiny workhorses that can be implemented quickly.  It
would be a real PITA to try to do something like this yourself. And, if
they add in a character that you were not expecting, you will get
unpredictable results.

Something to consider.  Ask how it is being done now?  I cannot imagine
that you are the very first person there to have walked into this landmine.
