Sorry that I missed the Friday fun. MCM--loved the Coolidge-ian brevity. I have found that it's less often the translation software than the Gateway/Application Interface that has an issue with this.
Like with the European experience, I think that in the U.S. it's also a vestigial process--one of those great "on paper" things dreamed up by the X12 nerds (no offense) and also in a world with expensive kc charges (and per Interchange fees in the OLD days), but which has fallen out of use. I've recently been doing more Manufacturing mapping, but 95% of my experience has been in the Retail or Wholesale supply chain and I cannot remember the last time I was sent an X12 Interchange that contained more than one Functional Group. And as a matter of course, I've **NEVER** been asked to include more than one FG in an Interchange, so I just don't do it. On a related subject, today I actually looked fondly on the old days of "minimalist" X12 (high kc rates), where something marked "optional" was TRULY optional and not expected. (Had to re-open an EDIFACT map to add "optional" address details to the NAD Segments.) I've just gotten in the habit of only mapping Mandatory/Required/Recommended/Suggested Segments & Elements and skipping anything marked "Optional." That comes back to bite me in the a** especially when testing with everyone's favorite Ponzi scheme--er, TP Compliance service provider (whose "M/O" indicators in the posted IGs NEVER correspond to what's in their templates).
