When everything is going well they *are* unnecessary, and most of the 
time EDI does go well. The situation changes slightly if you hit a 
problem, such as an unknown article number, and a human being gets 
involved. The presence of the description then helps them sort the 
problem out since it gives some sort of handle on the unknown product.

If the EDI is not true EDI, but Web-EDI  or 'EDIFax', then the 
descriptions are normally necessary.
