Along with Rachel, I am also curious as to Karin's comments regarding EDI.
Having been implementing EDI technologies in multiple industries since 1987 and specifically Heathcare since 1999. I have found that the use of EDI is indeed split in the following areas, 1. Flat file transfer via secured FTP 2. Excel spreadsheets transferred via multiple methodsl 3. Standard structured X.12 in the USA healthcare industry. In terms of career as, EDI is not really understood by Heathcare systems, the Healthcare opportunities are in the IT arena associated as part of the ERP systems (Lawson, Peoplesoft, Epic systems) and implemented by "those consultants" . It is suggested that 2 options for careers may be considered: A. - Heathcare systems such as CHE, CHI CHW, Adventist, Sanford, Sutter Health or GPO's such as MedAssets, Premier or others based in Charlotte or Dallas. Major suppliers such as Mckesson (Atlanta) or Cardinal (Dayton Ohio), or others that I have dealt with. B. - ERP Implementation Consulting Groups such as CSC, Oxford Consulting, CTG, SPS to mention a few. Please remember - Healthcare is like any other business however the Healthcare staff do not seem to have the business acumen that exist in other industries, such as Transportation, Manufacturing or Automotive. Personal opinion :-) Hope this information is of value. Dan and Mike, we have been acquainted for years via GEIS or Klienschmidt. Wish you both well and continued success. Look me up on Linkedin if I can be of assistance in any way. Most Respectfully, Robert M. Herron Retired Business and Systems Professional. Re: job Search Posted by: "KK" wo...@yahoo.com wokha Date: Mon Oct 7, 2013 3:39 am ((PDT)) Dan, Now EDI is basically spilt into two major areas. 1) Custom EDI - with Health Care, Service Providers, B2B having their custom layouts. Most of these also have COTS included. This is primarily coding using Java/C# with XML or 2) Users using COTS - Biz Talk, GenTran - convertors. These needs knowledge of Mapping, & Configuring either of those or other similar tools. EDI recently has picked up with Mandated use in HealthCare (Health Care Act) for Payments, Electronic Records that are going in now or shortly. Also a lot of activity with X12 and EDIFACT going on now. So even tough it is kind of niche market it is doing pretty good now. Good Luck. The trend I saw in my consulting practice (when I had an active one) is that EDI has become a very mature, commodity market, with fewer companies running their own translators. For small companies the trend has been toward web-based solutions, and for mid sized to large companies who want to integrate their back end applications the trend has been toward outsourcing ("in the cloud", managed services, whatever). If you want to stay in EDI your best bets may be with service providers. Health care insurance (HIPAA EDI) may be an exception to those trends, but most employers in that niche want business experience in health care in addition to EDI skills. Depending on what your software skills are you may have a more promising future in writing software. Mike ----------------------------------------- Michael C. Re: job Search Posted by: "Rachel Foerster" rac...@rfa-edi.com rachelfoerster Date: Mon Oct 7, 2013 7:54 am ((PDT)) A couple of comments to Kiran's message below: The use of X12 (EDI) in health in the U.S. is not recent, it's been mandated by federal law since 2000 under the HIPAA law of 1996. And since the HITECH portion of the ARRA law the use of HL7 is mandated for meaningful use of certified EHRs. I'm curious - please describe the "lot of activity with X12 and EDIFACT going on now" . . . Thanks.
