I tend to lurk on this list and pick up lots of useful tips and info but
maybe someone can help out with a linux query.

I run two computers at home: desktop and laptop and have tried three or four
different version of Linux on both of them but it simply will not run.

Is there something inherent in Linux that I'm missing do you think?

I know this is vague but it might have hit a nerve somewhere!

Older hardware with BIOSes created before 2001? If yes then you could be
limited in your choices of distros. Most current live cds will not work,
and many current distros will barf too.

A solution that I used with similar hardware that used a serial mouse
was installing RH7.3 and then upgrading to RH9. You can try
http://www.linuxiso.org/ for one of suitable vintage for the desktop.
The laptop, which you have not idenitified, is likely to be another
problem especially if it's an old Compaq. Checkout
