Owen,
DCOM is a term used by Microsoft to describe the Remote Procedure Call
mechanism they use to pass messages between COM componnents. Microsoft
introduced DCOM when they wanted to emphasize that COM components were
capable of communicating between different Microsoft platforms, but has
recently downplayed it, claiming that distributed communication is
simply a feature of COM. In any case DCOM is a part of the Microsoft
Windows OS. Like all Microsoft OS utilities, only an incomplete
specification is available. All the information you might want on it
is available from the Microsoft COM/DCOM website.
For the best comparison between DCOM and CORBA, go to the OMG website:
www.omg.org/library/whitepapers.html and download DCOM and CORBA:
Side by Side... by P.E. Chung. This detailed technical comparison
will really give you a detailed idea of what DCOM does.
