I wasn't trying to gain points! However the ERP vendors have shown that it
is possible to automate important areas of a company's operations using
tailorable off-the-shelf components. These vendors now usually provide an
API to access their components.
What is clear is that we have a wide variety of interpretations of what we
mean by re-usable components. I prefer a definition which focusses on
interfaces, deployment and development lifecycle issues and which embraces
the existing. Others seem to favour one which focusses on languages,
runtimes and communications protocols and insist that we don't yet know how
to build them.
