ABout MySQL:
This database do not supports transactions but a custom lock mechanism
(and that's one of the reason of its performances), so I don't really
think it will work with EJB, because EJB repose on transaction.
Perhaps the JDBC driver emulate transaction, so in that case it could
work and it would be interresting to do some performance test.

About Interbase:
I've used it in a EJB project just before it became open source (v5.6),
and this is a nice DB with a little memory footprint. The major
drawbacks are lack of operation and compliance with SQL92 concerning
date and time manipulation, and a buggy JDBC driver (interclient 1.51)
for the few implemented date and time manipulation operations.
