In EJB, instance pooling keeps a collection of enterprise bean instances in
memory so that they can be reused to service client requests. The goal is to
reduce the number beans that are needed to service a client population and also
reduce the creation and garbage collection of bean instances.

Connection pooling keeps a collection of database or other resource connections
(e.g. JMS) in memory so that they can be reused to service enterprise bean
requests. The goal is to reduce the number connections that are needed to
service all the enterprise beans in the container system. This reduces the work
load on the resource, so for example, a database needs to support far less
connections if they are shared by the EJB container that is using them.

Pooling has the same goals for both instance and connection pooling. The idea
is to conserve precious resources by reusing things. The more you can reuse an
instance or connection the less of them you need, conserving memory and the
processing cycles needed to set the resources up
