Then I will give you my fresh suggestion.
Do not use autoincrement for your keys.
This is discussed in depth on the web in various articles, but I can
give you one good reason now - not portable. Autoincrement is supported
only in some databases. Furthermore, often, simple integer keys are not
a very good idea, especially if they are 32 bit based. Finally, it is
often considered better to use keys that are unique across all tables,
even databases sometimes, which is not the case when you use autoincrement
on a table basis.
If you have no choice but to use the feature, then I believe both a BMP
and CMP solution have been posted to this list, and I don't think you
will improve upon them greatly. There have also been some useful postings
on the Orion mailing list.
