I'd recommend Interbase (www.borland.com/interbase) by Borland. It's
free and open source, and it's a bonafide client-server RDBMS. It runs
on Windows, Linux and Solaris that I'm aware of, possibly others.
One thing that I'm not wild about though is for its JDBC driver to
work, you have to have an extra little server process running
(interserver) that the JDBC driver talks to, instead of the main
server process.
