Hey,

Your assumptions about the CLR not being ported to other OSes are incorrect.
Check out http://www.go-mono.com, developed by Ximian. I am quite sure we
can expect FreeBSD variants etc, etc.

As for J#, well, it shouldn't be any suprise to anyone following the
development of .NET up till now. I am sure that if their strategy continues
as it is now, you see Cobol#, Perl#, or any other combination of XXX# that
you can think of,

Glenn.

I agree with that - by using J# you are using a language that will look
very similar (if not completely equal) to the Java Langauge. But the runtime
environment of your applications is not the good old Java VM (god bless it)
and associated APIs - you will be running on the CLR, Microsoft's VM - and
by now, that is WINDOWS!

So, if you use J#, say bye-bye to portability. It'll only run on M$ and CLR
ports to other operating systems (none so far). I doubt there will be ports
of CLR to other OS, given the success (or better, lack of) that COM ports
had in the past.

 my two cents.
 what do you guys think?

I think it is smart, Microsoft makes Java sort of a sub-product of .NET

Of course you can write Java, but everything that comes out of this box will
be subject to Microsoft rulez, which in the long run means that they make
money with it, and probably add some stuff that won't work on something else
then the dreaded Windows-platform.

But, that's my opinion, hope to hear yours.......
