One thing certain is 8.1 is more stable than 6.1 in managed server.  If you are using single server then you are not much affected.
 
Additionally, with 8.1 there are more server tools you could use to profile your application whereas 6.1 does not support it.  Technical doc is available on edocs.bea.com
