Assalamu 'alaikum wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakatuh,

Dear friends,

This is the respond from Prof Adi Setia. To update you, I posted something
on Gconomics, which is replied by an IBFNet member, and here is the reply to
that reply.

The initial reply by Dr Omar was:

*The notion of "Gift Economy" deserves further exploration. However,
claiming that where market economy is "predicated on self-interest ..., it
is amoral," implies that the notion of self-interest itself has something to
do with being amoral. If this is implied, it is an utterly erroneous view
and understanding.

I am a Muslim because of my self-interest. The choices I make in
life should be dictated by my self-interest. Since as a Muslim I seek the
hasanah in both the worlds, my self-interest is more comprehensive. Not only
that there is nothing inherently wrong or amoral about self-interest, it is
acknowledged and validated in the Qur'an.

As Muslims we should be careful in making such overstretched remarks
and having such views that is explicitly contradicted by the Qur'an.*

With best wishes
Surya

Response of Prof Adi:

Very short response. Long, indirect one, can be found in the going-green
article, and in the maths research article.

*Actually, the whole issue boils down, in a nutshell, as to whose's
conception of "self"-interest is being defined, articulated,
institutionalised, globalised and systematically implemented (even
systematically stuffed down people's parched throats) in the real world for
the past couple of centuries or so, very especially, post-WW2? I assume the
answer to that is self-evident.

Thus, with sincere due respect to Dr. Omar, we all shouldn't be too quick in
invoking the big banner of QI (Qur'anic Incompatibility) on the global
promoters of the IGE, or even of the CGE (Christian Gift Economy, as
exemplified in the Scott & Bader Commonwealth Ltd.) or the BGE (Buddhist
Gift Economy, articulated so passionately by E. F. Schumacher in Small is
Beautiful) or even the SGE (Secular Gift Economy of Mark Anielski's Economics
of Happiness).*

*khayrul-kalaam maa qalla wa dalla lil-'aaqiliina haqqa 'uquulihim*
*
*adi
