Greetings fellow Elecrafters, Somehow I have ended up with a bunch of brand-new Yuasa 12v 0.8 amp-hour gel cells (well, I got them at a GOOD price). Each battery is about the size of a pack of playing cards and weighs just over 11 oz. They are approximately 3-3/4" wide x 2-3/8" high x 1" deep, with a 3/8" overhand on one side for the connector wire (red and black wires that end in a 'Mate-n-Lok' plug similar to, if not identical to, that used to plug in the K2's optional internal battery).
I use these as portable power packs for my HTs (I run two in parallel), by replacing the plug with Anderson Powerpole connectors (I have a Powerpole to circular plug adapter made up for my HTs). Why do I like these over AA battery packs? They're cheap, they're rugged, it's hard to lose one battery (and thus you can't get full voltage), and they're easy to charge... just hook 'em up to your cigarette lighter outlet in your car, a cheap 12v solar panel, or to your shack's 12v (13.8v) power supply. Of course, you can use any battery charger designed for 12v gel cells with them also. They would make GREAT batteries for the KX1 and K1 units, and of course they'll work with the K2 also. They also work great as power packs for any HT or portable QRP rig that can run off of 12v, or do what I've done and put a few diodes in line to step down the voltage to work with units like the Icom T90A. A clever ham (redundant term) should be able to do lots of creative things with these batteries (make power packs for PDAs, cell phones, GPSs, etc.). I have around 140 give or take, and they're first-come, first served.
