Hello Susan:

You got a lot of good responses. One way to quantify the receiver
performance is to use a signal generator with a known output level and see
if it produces the expected signal in the receiver. Elecraft has a little
one (XG3) that fits in the palm of your hand that will check your K3 on 3
bands. If it's good there, it's likely good everywhere, Hi! Alternatively
you can use the little wide-band noise generator they have for all bands. I
don't believe its output is calibrated but if you can establish that the K3
is working properly and log what noise level it produces on all bands, it’s
a simple matter to run the check in the future of you're curious.

If you are again on the high seas, you may find the noise levels are
astonishingly low at certain times, allowing you to hear signals that are
normally buried. I used to love SWL-ing when well offshore with the regen
receivers most older radio consoles used as the emergency rx. Signals from
all over the world jumped right out of an almost non-existent noise level.
And then a squall line shows up and the cans get blown off my ears, Hi!

Even moored in port you may have a better noise environment than 99% of us
ashore.

It seems that most signals I hear are rather weak....is it that the K3 is
now allowing me to :hear: signals I didn't before?, OR is it that something
is deficient?

Susan
