I have a similar problem with my "old" Prolific chip based usb/serial cable. It worked fine on my XP computer. The driver loads without issue on my new Windows 7 computer and creates a virtual serial port and recognizes and installs the adapter when I plug it in, but in my case, I am unable to connect to the K3 utility (haven't tried anything else). I have not been able to resolve the issue with the latest drivers from Prolific or from the driver on the Elecraft download page. I have been using an old XP laptop to configure and do firmware upgrades.
