There are some uses for AM mode, even if you never listen to a ham or transmitter sending AM. To listen for noise, set your bandwidth to 2.7/2.8 and listen on AM. Listening this way can be very useful.
For instance in a power line noise I have somewhere to my southwest, there are repeating nulls in it as you tune across 160. These are somewhat indicated by S meter in CW or SSB. But the nulls are very obvious tuning across the band in AM. I know where the nulls are, and I use that in picking a run frequency in a contest. 73, Guy.
