John, that's more evidence that it's the forward and reverse power detection 
diodes in the KPA100 that failed since when you remove it the power 
detection function is handled by a separate diode detector in the base K2.

The base K2 doesn't have a full forward/reverse power detection circuit to 
calculate SWR. It uses a simpler diode detector to only measure the output 
power at the antenna connector and reports the power assuming a 50 ohm 
non-reactive load. The detector output tells the K2 when it is producing the 
power requested by the POWER control.

k2 by itself transmit fine, when hooked just to kat100 without kpa 100 it
goes hi current during transmit no matter 2 watts or 15 watts.
