What you are "missing" is that many operators *do* use compression and 
TX EQ for SSB work.
DATA A is the same as SSB, but TX EQ is automatically turned off and the 
compression setting is set to zero.
Other than those two items, DATA A is just like SSB - Oh, it will also 
remember that the audio input is on LINE IN (and remember the level) 
while one of the mic jacks is active for SSB mode.

If you never use voice SSB, your setup is just fine, but if you ever 
plug in a microphone to use SSB for voice work, you will likely end up 
setting up DATA A so you don't have to change menu entries and mess with 
the level settings when switching from voice to JT65
